After seven years, Mike Garrigan was back on the top step of the of the podium when he won the 2014 Shimano Canadian cyclocross championships in Winnipeg on Oct. 25. His last championship win was in 2007. He beat the previous year’s champ, Greg Reain, on the course in Kamloops, B.C. For 2014, Garrigan’s preparation for the title race included events part of USA Cycling’s Pro CX series, such as CrossVegas and the KMC Cyclo-cross Festival in Providence, R.I. The week leading up to nationals, he eased off the training. He admitted that during his pre-ride of the course the day before the competition, he felt pretty fresh. He spent the whole championships race out front. In the final lap, it appeared Geoff Kabush and Michael van den Ham might reel Garrigan in. But Garrigan wasn’t worried. “I knew they would be racing for second,” he said. “I knew that it took me a good two to three laps to get 10 seconds on them, so I figured there would be no way they’d put 10 seconds into me on one lap. I just kept it steady and tried to keep one last punch for the end in case they got within sprinting distance.”
