Review: Opus Vivace 3.0

I did the bulk of my testing on the Opus Vivace 3.0 when most riders were hanging up their road bikes for the season. Winter was trying to make riding difficult, but I was watching the weather closely for openings. I was game to get on the bike as much as I could, not just in the name of research, but because it was so fun to ride. It has a great feel, making it a pleasure to take out on a lunch ride – even though I’d seem to spend most of the lunch ride suiting up – or out for hours.

Montreal to host cyclocross World Cup event during 2015-16 season

On Friday, the UCI announced that Montreal will host a cyclocross World Cup event during 2015-16 season. “I’m delighted the second round of the 2015-2016 UCI cyclocross World Cup will be taking us to Montreal,” said UCI President Brian Cookson. “It shows that cyclocross is becoming more international after Louisville hosted the UCI world championships for the first time in 2013. A new phase has now begun in North America with the first round of the UCI cyclocross World Cup to ever be organized in Canada. With Montreal following Las Vegas to open the season, these events are pushing back the discipline’s geographic boundaries.”

World cyclocross championships preview with Aaron Schooler

Four days before the elite men’s world cyclocross championship race, Aaron Schooler spoke with Canadian Cycling Magazine from his home in Tübingen, Germany. The Edmonton native planned to drive to Tabor, Czech Republic the following day, which he figured would take him roughly six hours. It will be Schooler’s first time racing at Tabor, a World Cup venue and host of the worlds in 2010 where Zdeněk Štybar won the elite men’s race. Schooler brushed up on his knowledge of the course through video. “What I like doing, especially for races that have been World Cups before and that I haven’t been to is preview and re-watch old races to see what the course is like and what it could be like in different conditions,” he said.

Aaron Schooler on Hoogerheide and preparing for snow at the world cyclocross championships

At Sunday’s final cyclocross World Cup race in Hoogerheide, The Netherlands, Edmonton’s Aaron Schooler crossed the line in 55th place, Canada’s top finisher. The result, near the back of the field that included race winner Mathieu van der Poel, World Cup series winner Kevin Pauwels, and such CX stars as Sven Nyns and Lars van der Haar, doesn’t tell the whole story.

Top Canadian rider from the Tour of Alberta, Ryan Anderson, on the 2015 route

In Spruce Grove, Alta.’s city hall, there were politicians, community representatives from various towns, race organizers, sponsors, and even fire fighters. They were there for Thursday’s announcement of the host communities for the 2015 Tour of Alberta. Ryan Anderson, the top-placed Canadian in the 2013 and 2014 editions of the TOA was also on hand. It was fitting, not just because of his successes in the race, but he grew up in Spruce Grove. The 27-year-old rider from Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies spent 18 years in the town roughly 35 km west of Edmonton.

The Rockies to feature in 2015 Tour of Alberta

After two years of Prairie-centric stages, the 2015 edition of the Tour of Alberta will take riders into the Rocky Mountains. The 2014 six-day race stayed out of the mountains, while the inaugural event lost its stage from Black Diamond, up Highwood Pass and on to Canmore because of flood damage caused earlier in 2013. Stage 3 of the 2015 race will run from Grande Cache through the Municipal District of Greenview to finish in Jasper National Park. Stage 4 will start in the town of Jasper and finish at the top of the Marmot Basin ski resort. The inclusion of these mountain stages came with the co-operation of federal body Parks Canada.

Davide Formolo’s American dreams and his new U.S. squad, Cannondale-Garmin

A moment after Davide Formolo took his seat, he was back up again. We was distracted by what we saw from the 17th floor of New York hotel in the Meatpacking District. “It’s the Statue of Liberty,” he said. Even though the 22-year-old rider from San Rocco di Marano di Valpolicella, Italy has been to New York before, as recently as this past October, he was excited to be back, to be in the U.S. for the Cannondale-Garmin team launch.

Interview with Cannondale-Garmin rider Ted King

On Wednesday, he and five of his teammates—Andrew Talansky, Ben King, Dan Martin, Davide Formolo and Joe Dombrowski—modelled the new kit and helped to kick on the new season. The racing gets started for King on Jan. 19 at the Tour de San Luis.

Dufflet Rosenberg’s chocolate hazelnut mascarpone torte with raspberries

The recipe by Rosenberg is a bit of an indulgence for the holiday season. “Assembly is the trickiest part,” she says. “All the components are fairly simple: the filling is simple; the glaze is simple. The difficulty comes when you put it together. Try to make sure it’s not lopsided and that you chill it so the glaze goes on evenly. But, in the end, you’re going to eat it, so what’s most important is how it tastes.”

The team at 7mesh, a cycling clothing company based in Squamish, B.C., seems to operate with the same respect for the sport, but isn’t interested doing things as others have. Prevent saddle sores with Louis Garneau’s chamois cream. But if chafing does happen, address it with a skin repair gel by Assos. Likewise, keep your chain from degrading. Use a lube like the Bike Medicine’s hard-core Purple Extreme.

2014 holiday gift guide: Tires

Schwalbe’s Procore features two narrow inner tires for mountain bike wheels (26″, 27.5″ or 29″). Each inner tire sits on a rim and holds pressures between 55 and 85 psi. On top of the Procore inner tire is a regular tubeless-compatible tire, which can be run at 10 to 20 psi. The two-chamber system means you can get great traction from the low outer pressure, and reduce the likelihood of getting a pinch flat with the high inner pressure. Just one valve manages the air in both chambers.

2014 holiday gift guide: Get extravagant

While Campagnolo continues to refine its electronic gruppos, it’s still invested in the mechanical. This year the Italian company released the 11-speed Super Record RS, its top-end, battery-free groupset. The components combine performance with a rich racing heritage.
