Trek ups the octane for 2020 Top Fuel bikes

Long-standing cross country bike goes further with longer legs and updated geo

Following the trend of companies making cross country bikes that are actually fun to ride outside of a race situation, Trek has updated its Top Fuel dual suspension bike for 2020.

2020 Trek Top Fuel – more capable in more situations

For 2020, the Top Fuel stretches from balanced 100 mm travel to a more capable, but still racy, 120 mm fork and 115 mm rear travel. The longer legs are matched with an update to the bikes geometry to move it closer to the “trail” end of cross country riding. The new-look XC bike gets a longer reach, and slacker head tube angle, designed to make the bike more stable when the trail points down.

Trek isn’t abandoning the Top Fuel’s race heritage, though. It’s more of an update of what the Waterloo, Wisc. company believes riders consider cross country. The changes are designed to give riders more control, while trail riding for fun and while racing, without giving up the bikes race pedigree.

Race proven on rough ground: FKT with the Top Fuel on White Rim Trail

To launch the updated Top Fuel, Trek sent US XC Marathon national champion Payson McElveen (Orange Seal Off-Road) on a massive, 100-mile mission to set a knew FKT on Utah’s White Rim Trail. Set in the states Canyonlands National Park, White Rim Trail required McElveen to be fleet footed, but also handle the rough Utah terrain. While the national champ’s fitness surely helped him on the trail too, he rode the Top Fuel at a blistering pace to beat the previous record by nearly 15 minutes.

Matching the new frame features, Trek specs the full Top Fuel line with wider bars, shorter stem and dropper posts. To keep you moving forward fast and maintain that ‘race bike’ heritage, there’s also a TwistLoc dual remote lockout.

For those looking for Trek’s Mino Link adjustable geometry flip-chip, it’s still there. The adjustment is now integrated into the top shock link, which Trek says makes it easier to access, and change quickly.
