Riders head to Thunder Bay to compete for maple leaf jerseys and medals

This weekend, Thunder Bay hosts the 2024 XCM Canadian championships, a premier event in cross country marathon (XCM) mountain biking. The event’s challenging course is more than 90-km long and runs through Thunder Bay’s Kinsmen Park in Trowbridge Forest.

Riders across elite, masters, open, and youth categories will compete for the coveted maple leaf jersey and the prestigious Canadian champion title.

Trowbridge Trails

Thunder Bay’s Trowbridge Forest, managed by the Blacksheep Mountain Bike Club, offers a network of 32 km of singletrack and 15 km of doubletrack trails. This trail system has hosted races for 25 years. 2024 marks its debut as the host for the Canadian championships. Racers will face a demanding 30.6 km lap course, completing three laps to cover a total distance of 91.8 km. Total elevation gain is 1,347 m.

Top Riders Compete in Thunder Bay

The 2023 defending champions Haley Smith and Andrew L’Esperance are riding this weekend.

The 2023 Canadian XCM national champions, Haley Smith and Andrew L’Esperance, are set to compete again after dominating last year’s event in Whitehorse. Both riders will be in Thunder Bay, aiming to defend their titles on this challenging new course.
