Catharine Pendrel third on new Whiskey 50 Off-Road course

Kabush top Canadian in Pro Men's race over the weekend in Prescott, Arizona

Bear Mountain Canada Cup 2019

The Whiskey 50 marathon is a staple of the North American xc marathon racing scene, serving as a test of fitness for pro racers and amateur riders alike for decades now.

For 2019, the course received a big facelift, adding significantly more singletrack to the Prescott, Arizona mountain bike classic.

Pendrel rides solid teamwork to the podium in Prescott

The changes seemed to suit Catharine Pendrel. The Canadian Olympian scored third on Sunday, after three hours 50 minutes of racing. Working together with her Clif Pro teammate Haley Batten, Pendrel finished just 20 seconds back from second place finisher Chloe Woodruff (Stan’s Pivot) in second. Reigning XCO world champion Kate Courtney (Scott-SRAM) continued her dominant spring, adding a win in Prescott to earlier victories in early US Cup Pro XCT and Sea Otter races.

Former Canadian track Olympian Jasmin Duehring showed her skills extend well beyond the boards of a velodrome, finishing 15th in elite women. Whistler’s Chloe Cross finished in 21st, adding to her solid result at the Moab Rocks three-day stage race earlier this season.

Kabush top Canadian in men’s race

Geoff Kabush was the top Canadian in the men’s Whiskey 50. The veteran Canadian cross country racer crossed the line 13th on his modified Yeti SB 100.

Nickolas Zukowsky (Floyd’s / Van Dessel) of Ste Lucie des Laurentides, Que. was the next across the line from north of the border, placing 27th overall in the elite men’s race. Jasper’s Cory Wallace finished, arriving in Arizona from a big training block and on his way to a stage race in South America, finished 44th.

Keegan Swenson (Stan’s Pivot p/b Maxxis) won the men’s pro Whiskey 50 Off-Road in 3 hours 12 minutes. The Utah racer was a full six minutes ahead of Clif Pro’s Russell Finsterwald in second. Georwill Perez Roman of TrekPuertoRicoRacing was third.

Friday night lights – Whiskey Fat Tire Crit

While Sunday’s full 50 mile race is the main event, Whiskey 50 is a big weekend of racing for pros and amateurs. Friday’s fast paced fat tire crit through downtown Prescott has turned into a crowd favourite over the years. The high speed race puts mountain bikers back on the road, passing through Whiskey Row in the prelude to Sunday’s big show.

Kabush and Pendrel both finished sixth to finish as the fastest Canadians in the crit. Jasmin Duehring followed in 14th while Chloe Cross chased close behind in 16th.

Zukowsky was 19th in the men’s pro crit, with Wallace having a better day than he would on Sunday to place 21st.
