Canadian big mountain freeride pioneer Darren “The Claw” Berrecloth has announced his retirement from competition.

2018 Red Bull Rampage will mark the first time The Claw hasn’t contested the event since his first appearance at the Virgin, Utah event in 2002. His third place at Rampage that year helped launch the Parksville, B.C. riders mountain bike career. Berrecloth repeated his third place placing at Red Bull Rampage in 2010, building and riding an incredibly technical run down the competition’s freeride zone.

Outside of competition, Berrecloth made a name for himself by pushing big mountain freeride into new zones around the world. Most recently, The Claw was a part of Red Bull’s North of Nightfall expedition to ride in Canada’s northern territories.

The Canadian freerider also hosted the Bearclaw Invitational slopestyle event on Mt. Washington, near his Parksville home for several years. The final Bearclaw Invitational was held in 2014
