Showing further signs that her slow start to 2018 is behind her, Emily Batty started off her World Cup weekend in Val di Sole, Italy by finishing a strong seventh place in the short track cross country race on Friday.

The Canadian cross country national champion’s result qualifies her for a front row start in Sunday’s Olympic distance cross country World Cup race (XCO) outside Trentino, Italy. Specialized Racing’s Annika Langvad won Friday’s XCC ahead of Anne Tauber (CST Sandd American Eagle) and Alessandra Keller (Thömus-RN Racing).

While Batty didn’t see her usual top results at the start of the 2018 season, with her publicly sharing that her first couple international events did not go as well as she expected, the Trek Factory Racing rider turned the slow start around with a podium placing at the thrilling Nove Mesto World Cup round. Batty finished fourth at the Czech Republic race after chasing just seconds behind Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (Canyon Factory Racing) for much of the race.

Haley Smith (Norco Factory Team) and Sandra Walter (Liv/Team Canada) were the only other Canadians racing in Friday’s event, which only the top 40 men and women get to race. Smith finished 22nd with Walter seconds behind in 23rd.

The men’s XCC race was won by Matheiu van der Poel (Corendon Circus), who outpaced world champion Nino Schurter (Scott-SRAM) to claim his second XCC victory this season. Maxime Marotte (Cannondale Factory Racing) won a group sprint for third.

XCC is a new format that the UCI has added to the World Cup racing schedule for 2018. Results are used to determine the first two rows on the start grid for that weekend’s XCO race. Top finishers also earn points towards the World Cup overall.
