Show owner Emerald Expositions will look to restart a new version of the show in 2020

After relocating from Las Vegas to Reno, Nevada for Interbike 2018, the bicycle industry trade show will go on hiatus for 2019.

The company behind Interbike, Emerald Expositions made the announcement that the event, scheduled for September 2019, would not be happening in a press release Thursday evening. For now, Emerald is saying this isn’t the end. Interbike will look to revive itself for 2020, though possibly in a new format and potentially a new location.

“The company will research alternative plans for 2020 and beyond,” says Darrell Denny, Executive Vice President of Emerald Expositions Sports Group. “Including the opportunity to launch events featuring bicycling and bike related components within or alongside its various successful, multi-sport trade show franchises.”

Denny cited substantial changes to how the bicycle industry operates in North America, adding “the substantial increase in tariffs on bike related imports during 2018, and announced for 2019, is compounding these changes.” Those changes are being felt at Interbike offices, as the organization also announced it will be letting several employees go at the end of the year.

2018 wasn’t the first time Interbike had moved since first starting in 1982 in Las Vegas. The show tried Anaheim, and satellite shows in the Eastern states. It is the first time that the show will miss a year, though.

Going forward, Denny says, the organization “will conduct a review of the possible timing, locations and formats with dealers, brands, distributors, reps, designers and media over the coming months.

Emerald also announced Thursday that it would be shortening its Outdoor Retailer trade shows to three days.
