Geoff Kabush on Working Dogs and the Canadian cyclocross championships

On Thursday, at Interbike in Las Vegas, Geoff Kabush took a moment after signing posters to step into the Maxxis tires pickup truck. The night before he finished 18th at CrossVegas. On Sept. 6, he competed at the world championships in Hafjell, Norway. It seemed the travel was catching up with him: he had a bit of a cold. The cab of pickup truck was a quiet spot at the busy bicycle trade show.

From the driver’s seat, Kabush discussed Working Dogs, a new film by Sam Smith. The director is known for works that cover cyclocross, such as Transition, Transition 2 and Behind the Barriers. In 2010, Smith started a project examining the connections between Kabush and a group of sled dogs. The initial link between the two is Mont-Sainte-Anne, where Kabush raced in the world championships in 2010 and which is also close to where this particular group of dogs live.

Kabush found being the subject of a film a bit odd. “It’s still a bit strange and weird,” he said. “Sam, I know really well. He just really fades into the background. So, when we’re filming, it feels pretty natural and comfortable.” Kabush now sees the work as a nice memento.

Working Dogs is available through Sam Smith’s website. It will be screened Oct. 26 in Winnipeg as part of events leading up to the Canadian cyclocross championships. Kabush will be in Manitoba’s capital to defend the maple-leaf jersey.
