Since 2011, Prospera Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan has showcased the roads and scenery of B.C.’s Okanagan Valley. On Sunday, July 14, the rides—Granfondo (160 km), VeloFondo (126 km), Mediofondo (92 km) and Cortofondo (55 km)—start and end in Penticton, B.C. They feature roads alongside Okanagan and Skaha Lakes surrounded by the Columbia, Cascade and Coastal Mountains. All routes have a KOM/QOM challenges. Riders in the Granfondo face 1,600 m of climbing. Post-ride, all riders can tuck into some barbecue and quaff a well-earned beer. For cyclists who want even more climbing, there’s a 12-km hill climb race up Apex Mountain the day before the fondo rides. That day, kids can participate in the Piccolofondo around Penticton’s Gyro Park. If you go, you should also make time to visit a winery or two.
