Stephen Hyde rode into the Silver Goose double header as the defending Pan-American national champion. The Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com racer is also the U.S. cyclocross national champion, and has an array of SuperX frames decked out in red, white and blue to match his American champ kit.

Hyde rode several of his custom Cannondale SuperX’s to second place in Saturday’s UCI C2 Silver Goose race, behind race winner Gage Hecht. Heavy mud that clung to frames and drivetrains made pitting crucial to race strategy, ensuring more observant fans would have noticed a different variation on the stars and stripes theme under the U.S. champ each lap.

Hyde’s Pan-American title defense didn’t go so well on Sunday. The American champ crashed into Silver Goose’s granite steps while off the front with Canadian Michael van den Ham, dropping the Cannondale rider out of the race. What initially appeared to be a rolled ankle may be more serious. Hopefully we’ll see Hyde and his bikes back out between the race tape soon.

Before Sunday’s championship race, we took a closer look at one of Hyde’s Cannondale’s. Check out the details on his Silver Goose set up – photographed on a different set of stairs than the ones that ended his race – from Midland, Ont:
