A Canmore, Alta., invention has made it to the world stage.

In 2012, Jeff Thom created Pub Pedals, slip-on platforms that convert Crankbrothers Eggbeaters into pedals that don’t require bike shoes and cleats. The tension in the Eggbeaters’ springs hold the fibreglass Pub Pedals in place, allowing you to ride in any pair shoes.

Recently, the Pub Pedals won first prize in the accessories category in the 2014 ISPO BrandNew, a competition among sporting-goods startups. Thom will be heading to ISPO Munich, the world’s largest outdoor recreation show, in January to show off his creation.

Thom spent $15,000 in 2013 prototyping and patenting the idea. Later, the money from pre-orders helped fund the creation of moulds. Those pre-orders are scheduled to ship in February. Pre-orders are $27.00.
