2013 Buyer's Guide road pedals

::GEARBOX
Shimano Dura-Ace PD-9000
$400
42130

The new Dura-Ace pedal receives a minor update thanks to new graphics and an optional 4-mm wider axle that allows for more fit options – especially for larger riders requiring a wider Q-factor spacing. The new cleat pivots at the nose, eliminates lateral movement and offers improved security. The durable and lightweight carbon-fibre composite body and steel wear plate return as do the excellent bearings, a consistent release and retention mechanism, and a wide platform.

::GEARBOX
Time Xpresso 12 Titan Carbon
$400
42068

Time’s top-of-the-line road pedal features a unique retention mechanism that remains partially open after release for faster re-entry. Time has also added a new steel wear plate for increased durability and a smoother-operating single carbon-fibre leaf retention spring. The new pedal also provides a larger shoe-to-pedal contact area for more efficient power transfer. The carbon-fibre body and titanium axle keep the weight down to just 155 g per pair.

::GEARBOX
Look Keo Blade Ti
$455
42063

The Keo Blade uses a carbon-fibre leaf spring for the retention plate, which helps keep the weight down without giving up the clip-in security required during hard sprints. A large pedal surface ensures efficient power transfer while the 12-mm-diameter titanium spindle is strong and stiff enough so that there is no rider weight limit.

Speedplay Zero Chrome-Moly
$190
42064

With its dual-sided platform, micro-adjustable free-float and super-low stack height, the Speedplay Zero Chrome-Moly pedals are a worthy alternative to more conventional pedal options. The large platform ensures solid power transmission without compromising the excellent cornering clearance. The durable and affordable Chrome-Moly version of the Zeros weighs in at 216 g per pair.
