Emily Batty’s lo-fi solution to staying cool
In July, the temperatures at the national mountain bike championships were in the high 30s. The organizers at Hardwood Ski and Bike, north of Barrie, Ont., needed to keep riders in the shade as long as possible, so the elite women’s field was brought to the starting grid just a minute before the race began. Most riders wore ice vests until almost the last second in an effort to keep their body temperatures as low as possible before the gun.
