7 Canadians led by overall winner Zukowsky in top 10 at GP Saguenay

Pier-André Coté wins three out of four stages at Quebec UCI stage race

After a one-year hiatus from the calendar, the GP Saguenay returned in 2019. The UCI 2.2 four-stage race was dominated by Canadians and two young former teammates in particular. Pier-André Coté (Team Canada) won three stages on his way to ninth overall while Nicolas Zukowsky (Floyd’s Pro Cycling) took the overall win by 5 sec over American Matt Zimmer (NCCH) and Diego Milán (Intenja) of the Dominican Republic. In all, seven Canadians cracked into the top-10.

The GP Saguenay vowed to return in 2019 at the G7 summit in Charlevoix forced the cancellation of the 2018 edition. Instead, the organizers put on the Canadian road championships but were able to lay the ground work for a return in 2019.

Canada has historically done well at it’s home race with Ryan Roth and Matteo Dal-Cin winners in recent years. Both were part of the Silber Pro Cycling team that took a new form in 2019 as Floyd’s Pro Cycling. Coté and Zukowsky were both members of the Silber program.

In addition to the overall win, Zukowsky also took the points classification and youth classification. Mexican Miguel Luis Álvarez Ayala won the KOM jersey while composite Canadian/Hong Kong/Australian UCI X-Speed United team won the team classification.

Canada wasn’t only having a solid weekend at home. At the OVO Tour of Britain, Leah Kirchmann finished sixth overall and was second on the final stage behind Amy Pieters. Further abroad, Ben Perry took Stage 3 of the Tour of Korea and finished second overall. Perry bested Filippo Zaccanti on the stage but ultimately finished 41 seconds back on the Italian in the GC.

The Canadian race calendar continues with the Tour de Beauce on June 19 to 23 before focus shifts to the national championships which take place in Beauce a week later.
