A Canadian woman took scratch race worlds bronze for the second year in a row Thursday, as Stephanie Roorda stood on a Day 2 podium at the 2016 London UCI track cycling world championships. The powerhouse women’s team pursuit squad qualified for the first round with the second fastest time.

Stephanie Roorda was able to recreate the scratch race bronze medal success of Allison Beveridge in last year’s world championships in France. After 10-km of circling the oval with 19 other athletes, Roorda was third fastest over the line. The British fans roared their compatriot Laura Trott to the gold.

The day began with the Canadian women–Allison Beveridge, Jasmin Glaesser, Kristi Lay and Georgia Simmerling–posting the second fastest qualification time in the team pursuit with a time 4:20.664 over 4000-metres. The surprise of qualifying wasn’t that the Americans were top crew with a blistering national record of 4:16.180, but that the Brits didn’t qualify for the first round.

Canada face the Kiwis in Round One on Friday, while the Americans draw the Aussies.

When the derney puttered onto the boards for the women’s keirin qualifying, both members of Canada’s team sprint duo, Kate O’Brien and Monique Sullivan, came out of their heats with a chance at getting into Round One via the repechage. However, neither Canadian was able to make it into the final round.

Besides the women’s team pursuit first round and final, Friday sees Hugo Barrette start his sprint journey and Remi Pelletier-Roy begin his run at individual pursuit glory.
