When it comes to the worst that cyclists endure on the streets, many of us may think we’ve seen it all—likely with good reason. As these Australian riders experienced the other day, though, even the toughest, most traffic-refined riders can still encounter surprisingly bad—even frightening—incidents on asphalt .

Paul Evans was riding with three friends—Paul Greenwood, Robert Loiacono and Matthew J. Bullock, according to his Facebook—through the verdant stretch of Australian road when they were confronted by a Range Rover, driven by a motorist who seemed to have a problem with them. As they passed the Range Rover, which was traveling in the opposite direction, the vehicle suddenly stopped, reversed, and kept backing up, bearing aggressively down on the cyclists.

Before the Range Rover finally braked, it swerved dangerously close to the rider at the back of the group, wearing a red jersey.

Though that rider seemed to maintain control, he was momentarily forced off the road on to the shoulder. The Range Rover, meanwhile, proceeded forward once again, then sharply turned to the left, appearing as if the driver may attempt a U-turn to come back for more. The spooked group of riders continued on course, looking back over their shoulders to see what the vehicle was about to do. One of them appeared to stop to document the driver’s behaviour.

As of press time, it’s unclear what became of the incident. Shot on Jan. 31, the video has already been seen more than 100,000 times. Many commenters have called the incident a matter of unprovoked intimidation.
