Canada sends 29 riders to final Para Road World Cup to build on successful summer

New Canadian world champions to lead strong squad at Baie-Comeau

Building on success at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Maniago, Italy, Cycling Canada is sending a 29 rider-strong team to Baie-Comeau for the final Para Road World Cup of the season.

Canadian cyclists won seven medals in Maniago, including four gold. Shelly Gautier, Tristen Chernove and Michael Sametz, Canada’s three recently crowned world champions will lead the team on home soil when the season concludes in Baie-Comeau.

Toronto’s Gautier, became a double gold medalist at world championships in Women’s T1. Chernove, of Cranbrook, B.C., picked up a gold and silver in Men’s C2. Calgary’s Michael Sametz won his world championship title in Men’s C3.

“We are very excited to race on home soil in Baie-Comeau,” said Sebastien Travers, national para-cycling coach at Cycling Canada. “Coming back from a strong Road World Championships, we look forward to performing at home.”

With the three-stop Para Road World Cup wrapping up at home in Quebec, Cycling Canada is taking the opportunity to send a large team, including younger athletes, to race in front of a supportive home crowd. “This World Cup is an amazing opportunity for NextGen and Devo athletes to be exposed to their first international events,” said Travers. “The people of Baie-Comeau have been invested in this event since 2010 and we can’t wait to go back!”

Baie-Comeau World Cup starts on Thursday, 16 August with time trial events, which continue on Friday. Road races take place over Saturday and Sunday.
