Beveridge climbs omnium ladder on final day of Hong Kong track cycling World Cup

The 2015-2016 UCI track cycling World Cup ended with Lithuanian vet Simona Krupeckaite winning the women’s keirin to bring the Hong Kong event to a close. On the final of three days there were no more medals for Canada, who earned a gold in the women’s team pursuit, a silver in the women’s points race and a silver in the men’s keirin.

The highlight for Canada on Sunday was Alison Beveridge taking second place in the omnium’s flying lap, a result that helped her finish in 9th place. Beveridge won the omnium in Cambridge, New Zealand in the second round of the World Cup and finishes in 6th place on the season.

Remi Pelletier-Roy’s eighth in the omnium time trial saw him finish 16th in Hong Kong and 28th in the World Cup.

Monique Sullivan couldn’t use the repechage to advance in the keirin, but she finished 9th all-around in the World Cup standings, her bronze in Cambridge giving her a huge boost.

Hugo Barrette’s 19th fastest individual sprint qualifying time in the 200-metre flying start was enough to get him into the first round where he met eventual silver medalist Chao Xu and couldn’t come out on top. Although Barrette missed the Cali, Colombia event because of a horrific crash while training in Cali’s velodrome, he finished 36th in the World Cup.

Barrette’s silver medal in Saturday’s keirin jacked him up to sixth in the World Cup.

Team Canada now has a month and a half pause before the world championships in London, March 2 to 6. The results in London will determine how many spots Canada received in the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympic Games.
