Bike thefts are down 22 per cent in the region of Waterloo

bikelockAccording to a CBC news article published on Thursday, in the first three months of the summer, bicycle thefts are down 22% as compared to last year over the same period. Between May and July in 2013 there were 520 bike thefts reported, while this year 403 were reported said local police. The highest drop came in July, where 37.8% fewer bikes were reported stolen.

Waterloo Police have stated that the lower number is the result of a concerted effort to limit thefts. Media attention and preventative measures by the community have all lead to fewer stolen bicycles. Waterloo Police are hopeful that the trend will continue next year.

There are still a shocking number of bicycles that are stolen, recovered and remain unclaimed each year. These bicycles are sold at police auctions three times a year.

The next police auction is scheduled for this Saturday at 9am at M.R. Jutz & Co.
