A squad of thirteen athletes will be heading to Valkenburg, Netherlands on Feb. 3 through 4, Cycling Canada and the Canadian Cyclocross Working Group have announced. The riders wil represent Canada at the 2018 cyclocross world championships.

As ever, the team constitutes a cross-section of Canada’s best, with some championship-level names in the mix.

With four reigning national champions among their ranks, the Canadian squad will be led by Christel Ferrer Bruneau of Granby, Quebec, the current Elite women’s national champion, and Abbotsford, B.C.’s Michael Van Den Ham, the Elite men’s titlist. Before hitting the mud at Valkenburg, the team will participate in the final round of the cyclocross World Cup, happening from January 27 to 28 in Hoogerheide, Netherlands.

“We’ve assembled a great team of athletes to represent Canada at this year’s world championships,” said Scott Kelly, the Canadian national cyclocross team’s program manager. “Our national program is still very much in a growth phase and our goal at every international competition is for our athletes to continue to learn and develop.”

“The world championships is a great opportunity for our riders to take everything they’ve learned this year, put it all together on the day and leave everything out on the course,” he said.

Cycling Canada high performance director Kris Westwood also remarked on Canada’s 2018 squad. “We are, as always, extremely grateful to our staff for volunteering their time and expertise during these world championships,” Westwood said. “This is the sixth consecutive cyclocross world championships for our core group of volunteer cylclocross staff, and we are incredibly appreciate of their efforts every year supporting the national cyclocross program at world cups and the world championships.”
