Canadian road championships: Masters road race results
The 2014 Global Relay Canadian road cycling championships continued this past weekend in Beauceville, Que., with the masters individual time trial, road race and criterium.
The road race saw the largest number of entrants — with close to 200 cyclists vying for the six red-and-white championship jerseys.
Trek-Fiera’s Jonathan Oligny won the 132.8-km Master A (men 30–39) race with a gap of 29 seconds over teammate Mathieu Charruau. Dominic Chalifoux, another Trek-Fiera rider, came third.
Jean-Francois Blais (Trek-Fiera) topped the 67-rider Master B (men 40–49) field after winning the 118.6-km race in a two-man sprint over the line against Michel Jean (Sports GTH). Brian McKeown (Radical Edge) was a close third, finishing only two seconds behind the winner.
Jon Gee (Ride with Rendall) took the 118.6-km Master C (men 50–59) title with a solo breakaway that saw him finishing 32 seconds ahead of the field. Last year’s winner, Miguel Sanchez (Sports Maguire), won a three-rider sprint for second place, edging Robert Sule (Erace Cancer Cycling Team p/b Bicicletta) by one second.
Team London’s Charlie Squires emerged from a two-man breakaway to repeat as champion in the the 87.5-km Master D (men 60+) category. He crossed the line ahead of James Laird, who placed second. Pierre L’Ecuyer finished 56 seconds behind the winner to take third.
The 73.5-km Master E (women 30–39) race ended with a four-woman bunch sprint to the finish. Zeina Loutfi (Acquisio) was crowned national champion with Chantal Gosselin (Les Rouleurs de l’Outaouais) repeating as silver medalist and Danielle McKibbon (Orthocare Cycling Team) with the bronze.
In another photo finish, the 73.5-km Master F (women 40+) race saw Brenda Sonnenberg (Orthocare Cycling Team) edge out the 2012 champion, Carole Vanier (La vie Sportive-Apogée), for first place; Robyn Angeles rounded out the podium in third.
