Canadian track cycling championships results from Day 3 at the Milton velodrome

On Monday, the third day of competition of the Canadian track cycling championships at the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am velodrome saw the country's top racers in individual and omnium competitions, as well as the start of the paracycling competition.

The third day of the Canadian track cycling championships at the Cisco Milton PanAm/ParapanAm Velodrome included action in both the men’s and women’s omnium competition.

Allison Beveridge of the Trek-Red Truck team dominated the women’s 500 m time trial competition that makes up the fourth phase of the women’s omnium event. More than a second faster than her closest rival, Beveridge took a clear lead in the women’s omnium standings. Stephanie Roorda finished second, representing Cycling BC. A further 0.659 seconds back, Jamie Gilgen finished third. While this event is part of the omnium, it is also a title event, with Beveridge the new champion.

Jasmin Glaesser, tied for lead in the omnium standings after Day 2, did not start the 500 m race. Glaesser has been feeling sick and chose to withdraw from the remainder of competition.

The men’s kilo race was very closely contested. Joakim Albert of Équipe Québec raced in the final heat, setting the winning time of 1:06.437, narrowly taking the winner’s jersey in the men’s 1 km time trial. Albert is not racing in the omnium.

“It was very helpful to see people’s times before I race,” said Albert. “It’s still my own race and I do what I do, but it’s helpful to see what the guys did, and I knew I could do a better time. It wasn’t the best performance of my life, but I was able to get the win by just a little bit.”

During the seventh heat, Aiden Caves took the lead in a time of 1:06.444. Ultimately, the Cycling BC rider had to settle for the second step of the podium.

Eric Johnstone set the early time to beat, of 1:06.531, which held up well enough for a third place in the time trial. The result will help improve Johnstone’s standings in the omnium.

“Yesterday was a rough day for me for sure,” said Johnstone. “Today’s feeling better. I haven’t done a kilo in a year and a half or so, so I’m happy with that.”

Steve Bauer won the men’s Masters C scratch race in a close sprint against Garnett Abbey. Bauer is the director of the new national cycling academy that is set to call the velodrome home.

Racing as an independent, Bauer stayed in the mix through the race, moving to the front to control things in the final laps.

Charles Cormier from New Brunswick finished third, and was the only other rider to finish on the same lap as Bauer and Abbey.

The 7.5 km race runs over 30 laps of the track, with winners based on position only, while times are not kept.

In the men’s Masters B scratch race, Ontarians swept the podium. Chris Firek won handily over Steve Grundy. Steve McKee finished third in the 10-km, 40-lap race.

Mathieu Charruau won the scratch race in the Masters A division in dominant fashion, more than a lap up on his closest rival at the end of the 40-lap competition. Chris Reid finished second, ahead of Mark Palma.

Beveridge extended her lead in the women’s omnium by setting the fastest time in the flying lap.

“It’s a little nerve wracking with the new format, but it’s interesting. It makes everyone go out and race hard, which is kind of nice. We’ll see what happens, it’s anyone’s game,” said Beveridge.

Roorda finished second overall, four tenths back from Beveridge. Gilgen rounded out the top three in the race.

Caves blitzed through the men’s flying lap to win the fifth round of the men’s omnium. Jacob Schwingboth suffered a slow start, but recovered to finish second, just more than one-tenth back from Caves.

Eric Johnstone had a strong start and despite a slight wobble coming out of the banking, claimed third.

During the women’s paracycling time trial, American Megan Fisher won the gold medal. Born in B.C., Fisher now lives in Missouri and races for the U.S.A. Canadian Marie Claude Molnar finished second to earn the silver medal.

In the men’s time trial, Canadian’s swept the podium. Calgary’s Brayden McDougall won the gold medal, ahead of Jaye Milley, also of Calgary.

“I haven’t been on a track for months, and it was great to be able to hit the track and do it in Canada,” said Milley. “I was so excited and the anticipation was killing me last night. To race on it and really push the limits, it’s a great track.”

Third in the men’s time trial went to Ross Wilson.

For the Masters C points race, Steve Bauer was unable to capture another jersey. He tied for points with Charles Cormier. Bauer got silver; Cormier, bronze. The win went to Garnett Abbey of Team Erase Cancer. “I’ve been waiting all my life for this,” Abbey said about the new velodrome. He compared it to the facility in Sydney, Australia. Abbey got into cycling in his ’30s. It started with mountain, then road and now track. The points race sees riders trying to lap the field, for 20 points, and contesting sprints every 10 laps. Bauer admits that he lost track of the sprints. He won two of the four sprints, but didn’t pick up any points on one contest.

Former Hamilton Tiger Cats linebacker Steve McKee won the Master B points race. He earned 50 points in 60 laps. Paul Beit was second (32 points); Steve Grundy third (26 points).

Mathieu Charruau won the Masters A points race with 15 points in 30 laps. Chris Reid was second (9 points); Mark Palma, third (-14 points).

The final event in the women’s omnium, the points race, seemed to start out at tempo, the racers just ramping things up for the sprints. Bevridge won the first few sprints extending her overall ominum lead. At roughly 75 laps in, Alizee Brien went on a flyer. She eventually caught the bunch and got 20 points. Brenna Pauly and Sarah Anne Rasmussen tried match Brien’s move, but the group caught them. During Lap 15, the track saw its first crash. Malanie von Stetten, Meghan Grant and Pauly want down. Only Grant got back into the race. “I had to re-focus and start pedalling my bike. It’s the national championships, so you don’t want to give up. I just wanted to get back in there an finish the race,” Grant said after. She wasn’t exactly sure how the crash happened, as fatigue in the later stages in the event can take its toll.

Most of the sprints were between national teammates Beveridge and Steph Roorda. Beveridge took enough to keep her ominum lead for the overall win with 224 points. “My teammate Steph—because I had to play a bit of a defensive role—I’m sure she’s pretty sick me right now. I watched her and nipped some points from her at the line to maintain that lead,” Beveridge said.

“It’s always fun to go head to head with your teammates. She’ll have a rematch next week with me. I’m sure she’s looking forward to that,” Beveridge added already looking ahead to the Milton International Challenge, Jan. 9-11.

Ed Veal lead the men’s omnium ahead of the points race. But the race of 40 km, or 160 laps, was quite volatile. Sean Mackinnon and Zayne Hayes both captured the lead at one point. Remi Pelletier-Roy, the winner of the individual pursuit and the elimination race, picked up enough points by lapping the field twice and gaining sprint points to take the race and the omnium. “It was one of the hardest races I’ve done,” he said of the points race. While he’s raced the Pan Am Games and the Commonwealth Games, he’s not a marked rider in those events as he was at the national event.

“I’m always nervous in a race. There’s no easy race.I lost the lead and got pretty antsy. Then, I got myself together to find the right place to attack,” he said.
