Chris Froome rammed off road by driver in hit-and-run

The three-time Tour de France champion's bike was totalled but he avoided injury

Chris Froom hit by car

Chris Froome was out for a training ride in Southern France on Tuesday when the three-time Tour de France champion says he was the victim of a hit-and-run. Froome claims to have been intentionally run off the road by an impatient driver. After the incident, Froome posted a picture of his damaged team issue Pinarello Dogma F10 and recounted the incident.

“Just got rammed on purpose by an impatient driver who followed me onto the pavement!” the 31-year-old Briton who rides for Team Sky wrote on Twitter.

“Thankfully I’m okay ? Bike totaled. Driver kept going!” Froome wrote.

Froome’s bike was irreparably damaged in the incident. It appeared to have been cracked on the top tube with the Shimano Dura-Ace wheels faring no better in the collision that miraculously left Froome uninjured.

Froome returned home to get a spare bike after and continued his training despite the close call which according to Team Sky will be reported to police.

The geotag in the Tweet indicated Froome was riding near his Monaco home in Beausoleil in France when the collision occurred. Froome is not racing the 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia. He is scheduled to defend his 2016 Tour de France title in July. Before that he has the traditional Tour warm-up race, the one-week Critérium du Dauphiné, on his calendar in June.

The incident comes a little more than two weeks after Michele Scarponi was struck by a vehicle and killed while training near his home in Filottrano, Italy. Closer to home, Crown prosecutors announced that no charges would be made in the death of Ellen Watters who was killed by a driver while out riding in New Brunswick late last year.
