Cycling Canada sending crack track teams to next three World Cups

Women's team pursuit squad to make season debut in Brisbane

After sending only two athletes to each of the first two events of the 2019-2020 UCI track cycling World Cups, Cycling Canada has named larger contingents for the next three rounds. Hong Kong (November 29-December 1) is the next meet, before a swing into Oceania for events in Cambridge, New Zealand (December 6-8) and Brisbane, Australia (December 13-15). The final round is in Milton from January 24 to 26 followed by the World Championships in Berlin, February 26 to March 1.

The eastern World Cup rounds are crucial in Team Canada’s qualifying for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Brendon Cameron, Canada’s head track coach, said, “The main goal is to maintain and ensure Olympic qualification in our chosen events, we track progress and forecast very closely after each event. We highlighted these three World Cups some time ago as events we wanted to concentrate on coming in with good form. The athletes will then have a short break before final preparation for the World Championships in Berlin at the end of February.”

For Hong Kong, Derek Gee will be the only Canadian from the first two rounds Minsk, Belarus and Glasgow, Scotland. He’ll be part of the men’s team pursuit squad and race the omnium, an event in which he took sixth in Glasgow.

Chris Ernst, Evan Burtnik, Jay Lamoureux, Aidan Caves make up the rest of the team pursuit outfit. Devaney Collier will also be contesting the omnium.

A quartet of Canadians will face sprint events, two on Team Canada itself–Hugo Barrette and Lauriane Genest–and two members of trade squad Pedal to the Medal, Nick Wammes and Kelsey Mitchell.
