Thursday’s second day of competition at the Canadian track championships proved many, many things, and in exhilirating, track-rumbling fashion. Among those was the sprint supremacy of Hugo Barrette and Monique Sullivan.
Long before the finals, though, the power of Canada’s track riders was already demonstrated, even in the preliminaries.
Throughout the day’s quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, Thursday’s action was intense, reaching a fever pitch audibly evident by each rumble of a rider’s passing wheels. In the fourth heat of the men’s sprint quarterfinal, B.C.’s Mischa Partridge took the win, blasting through the finish with a time of 11.289. The day’s individual pursuit competition, too, saw more than a few hair-raising rides from competing Canadian cyclists. The men’s pursuit race between Ryan Roth and Jack Burke, for example, was beset with tension from the start. After a false start, marked by a sudden gunshot, Burke made an attempt at overcoming Roth from the inside, but even in that preliminary competition, it wasn’t enough.
Roth nonetheless took the race, ahead of Burke by a margin of nearly ten seconds with a time of 4:32.464.
It came down to 2015’s Pan Am Games champions, though, to take the event’s top honours. Hugo Barrette and Monique Sullivan remain undefeated at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre, having racked up wins at the 2014 Canadian championships, the Milton International Challenge, the Pan Am Games and, as of this week, the 2014 Canadian championships. For Barrette, his championship ride came after clocking the Elite men’s fastest tme, slotting himself into a gold medal round he neatly won against his own teammate, Joel Archambault of Equipe du Quebec.

Sullivan’s win, meanwhile, adds yet another accolade to the Canadian rider’s career, after she all but glided to the gold medal competition. It was a round that saw her ride against a teammate, too, just like Barrette, with a win in two heats against national team compatriot Kate O’Brien. In the final, it was between Sullivan and Lizanne Wilmot, who the former bested in two consecutive heats to claim the coveted red and white jersey.
Paracycling was another event that saw Canadian athletes score big wins. The team of Daniel Chalifour and Jean-Michel Lachance rode 4 kilometres in the individual pursuit to take the gold medal, clocking a time of 4:29.084, 99.23% of the national gold standard. Marie Claude-Molnar, meanwhile, defeated her women C-class nemesis to score a first-place win on the second day of the event, clocking 4:19.386 (99.89) after crossing the finish. The Men C class saw Jaye Milley crowned the fastest of the bunch, with a time of 4:25.860 — 96.3% of the national average — after four kilometres of racing against Brayden McDougall of Team Alberta.
Jasmin Glaesser and Remi Pelletier-Roy, Canada’s two-medal omnium champions at the 2015 Pan Am Games, currently sit atop the standings after three of six events. Glaesser is in a tight battle with Stephanie Roorda while Pelletier-Roy is being chased by Kris Dahl. The individual pursuit was also a stand-alone Canadian championships event, and Glaesser and Pelletier-Roy both earned the title with world-class performances. Glaesser topped the women’s podium with a winning time of 3:37.280 over 3km while Pelletier-Roy posted a time of 4:28.72 after four gruelling kilometres to take the top position among the men.
