Geraint Thomas drops the mic on flawless Tour de France

Welshman closes out 105th edition of the Tour by cementing his place in the history of the greatest mic drops

For three weeks, Geraint Thomas was perfect on his way to winning the 2018 Tour de France. Day in and day out he crossed the line with the leaders never faltering, never crashing or suffering an untimely mechanical, and always having the best legs in the race able to follow his rivals on all terrain. He was rewarded with two-stage wins and the yellow jersey upon crossing the line in Paris on Sunday.

In his victory speech, Thomas tried to express his emotions and thank everyone on the team. It took him a while to get through all his teammates on the road coming close to forgetting Michal Kwiatkowski. He then thanked the Team Sky staff and the fans before abruptly remebering to thank his wife. At the beginning, he admitted he wasn’t one for big speeches but he closed the 2018 Tour in the perfect way with an absolutely brilliant mic drop.

“I got into cycling because of this race. I remember running home from school to watch the Tour de France and the dream was always just to be a part of it. That came through 12 years ago back in 2007. Now I’m here, stood in the yellow jersey. It’s incredible and it’s a dream come true,” Thomas said on the top step of the podium flanked by four time winner Chris Froome and Tom Dumoulin.

“To everyone back home, kids and the Maindy Flyers, just dream big. If people tell you it can’t be done, if you believe in yourself and work hard just keep going. You’re going to have knocks and downs. But keep believing, anything is possible and with hard work everything pays off in the end. Thanks for all the support,” Thomas said.

Then came the moment to wrap things up. “Thank you very much. Vive la Tour,” and with that Thomas droped the mic on the 105th edition of the Tour de France cementing his place in history with a brilliant piece of showmanship.

With the closing, Thomas joins the esteemed ranks amoungst histories greatest mic droppers.
