Riders in Halifax had something to celebrate on April 1, when Giant, the world’s largest bike manufacturer, opened Canada’s eighth independent Giant Store in the Nova Scotia city.

Featuring a 2,500-square-foot showroom loaded with the brand’s newest bikes and gear, the spacious, invitingly-lit new store is in a prime location for riders of varying disciplines, whether commuters from Dalhousie University, touring riders heading out on a cross-Canada journey or dedicated roadies and mountain bikers.

With that in mind, the store’s manager opened up the space early this month to celebrate the new store.

“I really wanted to connect with locals in the area,” said Barry Misener, a 20-year veteran of the Halifax cycling scene and the owner of another nearby store, Bicycles Plus, “and a full week of events felt like the best way.” Among the highlights of the week-long celebration of cycling and Haligonian culture were two Liv women’s nights, a microbrew tasting session and a party to cap it all off on the final night, with the talent of Richard Wile gracing the stage. Other events rounded out the week’s festivities.

Officials with Giant Canada praised the new site, looking forward to their future in Halifax.

“We were so excited when Barry showed us the location,” said Steve Devantier, Giant Canada’s retail supervisor. Along with the nearby campuses of two universities, the store sits at the foot of the Citadel National Historic Site, and is minutes away from the library, the Halifax Public Gardens and other city attractions likely to draw a range of both active and would-be cyclists. And thanks to a prior relationship with Misener, the brand is confident in its prospects.

“Having worked with Barry at his other store, Bicycles Plus, I knew that he would be the perfect person to partner with,” Devantier added. “Sure, we had some challenges. But Barry’s perseverance never ceases to impress me.”

Giant Bicycle Halifax is located at 5536 Sackville St. in the heart of downtown.
