Highlights: Matteo Dal-Cin triumphant on Mont-Mégantic

Ottawa native takes big stage win on iconic Canadian climb

Matteo Dal-Cin of Rally Cycling took perhaps the biggest stage win of his career when he took victory atop Mont-Mégantic on Stage 2 of the 2017 Tour de Beauce. The 26-year old arrived at the base of the climb with 2016 Tour of Alberta winner Robin Carpenter (Holowesko-Citadel). The pair had been riding in the break and had a two-minute advantage over the peloton.

Dal-Cin upped the pace with 3 km remaining and was able to distance Carpenter. By the line, he had built an advantage of 1:05 over the Holowesko rider. Dal-Cin’s American teammate Sepp Kuss took the final step on the podium.

The win is another big result for Dal-Cin who already has overall victories at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Saguenay in 2015, the Redlands Bicycle Classic in 2016 and a stage of the 2017 Tour of the Gila.

The riders start Friday with a 19-km time trial. Keegan Swirbul (Jelly Belly) wears the yellow leader’s jersey, Canadian Jack Burke (Aevolo) sits second overall, Jordan Cheyne (Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis) is third and Alexander Cowan (Silber Pro Cycling) is fourth. The top-3 riders are only separated by 10-seconds making it likely the leaders jersey will again change hands following the time trial.

The evening sees the riders race a 77 km. Both stages have so far been won by Canadians with Émile Jean of Silber Pro Cycling winning Stage 1.
