Homecoming celebration planned for Hesjedal

Victora native will be welcomed by his home fans Sept. 4 at the Victoria Parkside Resort and Spa

Canadian Tour de France hero Ryder Hesjedal will get a warm welcome from his hometown fans Sept. 4. The Victoria Times Colonist is reporting that a homecoming will be held in his honour next weekend:

By Cleve Dheensaw, Times Colonist

When cycling enthusiasts Jon Watkin and Cody Graham watched fellow Victorian Ryder Hesjedal place seventh in the Tour de France last month, they figured it deserved hometown acknowledgment.  So Watkin and Graham took it upon themselves to arrange it. “Ryder is a hometown hero and we want to congratulate him,” said Watkin, race director of the Bastion Square Criterium. Hesjedal’s result was the best by a Canadian since Steve Bauer’s fourth place in 1988. Within cycling circles, what he did in the Tour de France is huge. Some non-cycling fans might not understand the significance of his achievement and how big a deal it really is.”

The homecoming for Hesjedal is set for Sept. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Victoria Parkside Resort and Spa. Information on the homecoming can be found on www.victoria-cycling.com, by e-mailing jon@victoria-cycling.com or phoning 250-415-3246.
