In pictures: Michael Woods stunning second place at Liège–Bastogne–Liège
Woods is the second Canadian to stand on the podium of one of cycling's five Monuments
After 258 km in the hills of the Ardennes, Bob Jungels of the all-conquering Quick-Step Floors team emerged victoriously at Sunday’s Liège–Bastogne–Liège. After being setp up perfectly by his teammates, the Luxembourger finished off the race solo. Behind, a late attack from the chase group saw Michael Woods (EF Education-First) and Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondial) get free while the pre-race favourites looked at each other. The duo rounded out the podium with Woods unleashing a fierce burst of speed to land runner-up on the day.
Woods has had a quiet spring but his performance bodes well for the Giro d’Italia where he will be contesting the overall head-to-head with the likes of defending champion Tom Dumoulin and Chris Froome. The podium is only the second time a Canadian has graced the podium of one of cycling’s five Monuments. Steve Bauer was second at the 1990 Paris-Roubaix with Woods entering the history books as the second with his amazing result.
