Jakub Mareczko running wild in China

Wilier Triestina sprinter has won ten stages in last twenty days

Jakub Mareczko, an Italian sprinter of Polish descent who rides for pro continental side Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia, loves Asia. The 23-year-old has 33-victories on his palmares, and only three of those have come on another continent. Right now he’s on an almighty tear in China, having won five consecutive stages of the 2.HC-rated Tour of Hainan after five triumphs and the all-around title of the 2.1-rated Tour of Taihu Lake in October.

Mareczko took October’s Tour of Taihu title after Canadian Guillaume Boivin led for three stages. The Tour of Taihu champion of 2017 and 2015, the Italian has won 15-stages of the race over three editions.

Entered in three WorldTour one-day races and the Giro d’Italia this season, Mareczko’s best result was in his home tour where he placed runner-up twice to Fernando Gaviria. According to ProCyclingStats.com, Mareczko is tied with Gaviria and Marcel Kittel for most wins in 2017 but has more podium places. There are three stages of the Tour of Hainan left. Outside of China, Mareczko’s other 2017 triumphs were in Malaysia’s Tour de Langkawi.

Mareczko has another year on his contract with Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia but must be one of WorldTour teams’ most sought-after riders for 2019. Hopefully, the Tour of Guangxi will still be on the WT calendar.

Stage 6 of the Tour of Hainan saw Alexis Cartier of H&R Block Pro Cycling in the breakaway. The rider from Montreal has been quite active at the late-season race.
