A tight, intense pair of events at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre conferred Red and White jerseys on Jasmin Glaesser and Remi Pelletier-Roy on Friday, as the omnium series wrapped up at the Canadian track championships. For Glaesser herself, the 23-year-old’s win came after a tough ride against fellow British Columbian Steph Roorda.

It was a dynamic of friends and nemeses on the track that had been played out numerous times throughout the competition, having waged a close omnium battle over previous days — at least until Roorda carved out a two-point advantage.

The decisive, critical points race, though, is what decides the omnium’s outcome in most cases, and both riders clearly knew it. Early on, Roorda made a powerful attempt to lap Glaesser, but was unable to shake the young Optum rider who held fast to her rear wheel. Conserving her energy through most of the laps, Glaesser, waiting before striking, used her banked-up reserves to good advantage with the accumulation of five sprint poinsts. Overtaking the field earned her an additional twenty, when she poured on the chase hard, bearing down on Roorda. Eventually, after some finesse on the track that saw her overcome Roorda’s attacks, while also rolling out some critical sprints, Glaesser built her advantage to the tune of 223 points — more than enough to take the coveted Red and White jersey.

Roorda, meanwhile, finished the line in second with an equally impressive 215 points. Laura Brown took the sprint against Kirsti Lay, securing third with 173 points.

During the points race of the men’s omnium, the expertise of defending champion Remi Pelletier-Roy saw him prevail, with an omnium battle against Kris Dahl culminating in an exciting, technical race. Lik Glaesser, Pelletier-Roy played the long game, attacking only when he had to and keeping a calm, tactical head during the race. In the end, he cashed in his patience with a series of attacks on Dahl, lapping him twice, with some going unchallenged. As the points race came to a close, Pelletier-Roy successfully defended his title with the win and 231 points, while Dahl rolled to second with 204.

Later, though, Dahl made up for it by taking his first career track title with a win in the kilo race, clocking a time of 1:05.436.

Hugo Barrette found himself taking gold, too, after a breezy victory during the men’s keirin. Quickly after the gold medal race got underway, he easily torpedoed the six-man field to take his third Red and White. And in the 500 metre time trial, Kate O’Brien was another rider at the Canadian track championships to claim a first, as she took her first Red and White as an individual rider, with powerhouse Monique Sullivan coming in second and Kirsti Lay securing the third podium slot, taking third.
