Lex Albrecht launching her own espresso brand

Given the time-honoured relationship between cyclists and their coffee, learning that one of Canada's top riders is a bean buff probably shouldn't come as a surprise.

Pro cyclists can have unexpected side projects, no doubt. Dominique Rollin, for example, finds inspiration in the kitchen, painstakingly nurturing his food creations—a passion he decided to follow when he recently announced his retirement. Lex Albrecht, meanwhile, has her deep love of coffee.

Hopefully the news that she’s launching her own brand of espresso doesn’t mean the Canadian rider is going anywhere on us, though.

Through her website, Albrecht announced that she’s teaming up with Barista Micro Roaster, based in Montreal, to launch a blend she’s calling “Podium Espresso.” The blend is described as Italian in style and Ethiopian in origin, and will be available to purchase in 250g or 500g volumes, with a choice for consumers between whole bean and pre-ground.

“I’m a huge fan of coffee,” Albrecht said, “especially espresso. I have a lot of fun trying different styles and different brands during my travels as a professional athlete, during which I’ve developed my own taste for coffee. I’ve worked together with Barista to launch my version of ‘Podiu Espresso,’ an Italian style coffee, that works great for my french-press routine on the road, and as an excellent espresso when I’m home with my trusty machine.”
