Moncton city manager struck by car while cycling
Moncton city councillor manager Jacques Dubé is calling for extra vigilance on the streets, the CBC reported Monday. And he’s got good reason to do so.
On Sunday, at about 4:30 p.m., the Moncton city politician was on his bike, riding in the vicinity of Magnetic Hill, when he was struck by a vehicle. According to city spokeswoman Isabelle LeBlanc, the motorist in question fled the scene, while Dubé himself sustained minor injuries. He’s expected to be off work for the next week, LeBlanc added.
When he was hit, Dubé was en route to participate in a presentation on Moncton’s proposed downtown centre. That presentation has since been postponed until May 19, when Moncton city council reconvenes for its next regular meeting.
News of Dubé’s accident adds to a week of similarly grave cycling incidents. On Monday afternoon, a man in his 40s was killed while cycling on Highway 7 south of Calgary, between Aldersyde and Okotoks. Emergency medical crews arrived at the scene shortly before 4 p.m., reports said, responding to reports of a collision involving a car and a cyclist. While the vehicle’s occupant was uninjured, the cyclist—who wasn’t actually cycling at the time, but standing on the eastbound side of the road—died due to his injuries, described as “multiple” and “traumatic,” shortly after arriving at the South Calgary Health Campus.
