A long-standing part of the Halifax cycling community will soon be no more, the CBC is reporting.

In mid-December, Nauss Bicycle Shop, a 46-year fixture of Agricola Street, will be shuttering its doors and hanging up its bikes.

Eight years ago, founder Jack Nauss, for whom the store was named, passed away. Since then, the CBC reported, his son Dave has been running the iconic Halifax bike shop. Recently, however, the younger Nauss announced the shop’s closure through the business’s Facebook page, telling reporters that “now is just time to go.”

“I love my job,” Nauss told the CBC. “I’m going to miss every part of it. I’m going to miss the customers and the mechanical part of it.”

Nauss expressed his gratitude to a loyal following of friends, customers and neighbours, all of whom have remained steadfastly with the grassroots shop since the beginning. And while the absence of Jack Nauss Bicycle Shop will no doubt leave a void in the Halifax cycling scene, alternative options in the community, the owner said, will ensure that local riders’ needs are met.

Dear friends of Nauss bicycle shop, it is with so much gratitude and thanks to our customers and our community for all…

“There’s five shops in the city now,” he said, “and everything is online now.”

Forty-plus years of business, of course, have left the business with a remarkable surplus of inventory. Between now and when the shop officially shutters its windows in December, Nauss and his staff will be working to sell off much of that inventory, while he “reminisces about more than four decades of working in the business,” to quote the CBC.
