Peter Sagan has COVID-19….again

The Slovakian has contracted the virus three times

Former world champion Peter Sagan has COVID-19, again. This will be the third time the former green jersey winner has tested positive. “Yesterday, Saturday, after the finish of Tour de Suisse stage seven. I was given a COVID-19 test by the TotalEnergies doctor. Unfortunately, it came out positive. I have no symptoms, and I feel well but, as per the rules, I have to abandon the race,” he posted on Instagram.

This follows a massive wave of withdrawals in Switzerland. On Friday morning right before the first of two high mountain summit finish stages at the Tour de Suisse, COVID-19 was everywhere in the peloton. The day after Jumbo-Visma withdrew its squad following positive tests, new race leader Alexandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) had to quit because he had caught the virus leaving Jakob Fuglsang to take over the yellow jersey.

UAE-Emirates then removed the rest of their team from the 85th edition. Diego Ulissi was in fifth place on GC. Additionally Bahrain-Victorious, who led the race for four days via Stephen Williams, went home after positives.

The news couldn’t come at a worse time for Sagan, who seemed to be making comeback following a long Covid diagnosis. The Slovakian took stage three in Switzerland, and it looked like a positive development after a tough spring.
