Post-flood rash of bike thievery leads to recovered bikes and 17 arrests in Calgary

Calgary police, including members of the District 1 Mountain Bike Unit, have made 17 arrests and recovered 50 bicycles after a surge of post-flood thefts in the downtown core and the Beltway. The bikes vary in value, with machines that cost up to $5000 found in a two-month operation.

Police say they currently have 250 unclaimed bicycles in storage and that people with missing machines should contact them at 403-266-1234 to see if theirs has been recovered. After 30 days bikes are either auctioned, donated, recycled or destroyed. Many bike thefts go unreported.

Cyclists are reminded to locate their bike’s serial number under the bottom bracket and record it in case their rig is stolen. Invest in a good lock and lock the wheels as well as the frame.
