We found this incredible handmade truss-frame track bike while surfing the Fixed Gear Gallery forum. The owner of the bike explains that he built the eye-catching main triangle from “7005 square aluminum 1-1/2 tubing and cut out by an industrial CNC router. ” Surprisingly, the whole project cost less $100 to fabricate.
Truss frame construction is often used in bridges and other large load-bearing assemblies because it is strong, rigid and relatively lightweight. Â Truss-frames have also been adapted to various bicycles over the years. Some of the most famous examples are the jewel-like bikes of Alex Moulton.
Trained as an engineer, Moulton quickly realized the stiffness and weight savings achievable with truss frames and created arguably the world’s most famous truss-frame bike. Moulton’s creations can cost up to $25 000 – significantly more than the Fixed Gear Gallery creation.
