Ryder re-ups with Garmin-Transitions

Team Garmin-Transitions announced today they have signed a long-term extension with Canadian Ryder Hesjedal

Team Garmin-Transitions announced today they have signed a long-term extension with Canadian Ryder Hesjedal, keeping the Victoria native in argyle through to 2013.

Originally designated a super domestique for team leader Christian Vande Velde, Hesjedal was unexpectedly thrust into the leadership role at the team after Vande Velde crashed out of the tour in only the second stage. Currently lying in 10th overall, Hesjedal gamely stepped into the role and has proved to be one of the revelations of this year’s tour.

“Nobody expected Ryder to be hanging around the top 10,” Garmin Transitions’ Directeur Sportif Matt White said. “To be honest, if Christian were still in the race, he wouldn’t have had the opportunity. When Christian and Tyler crashed out, I told the other guys they can step up. Ryder has certainly done that.”

For his efforts, Hesjedal has been rewarded with a secure berth on the Pro tour team. In a sport where one-year contracts are commonplace, the three-year deal is a serious sign from Team Garmin-Transitions of their beliefs in Hesjedal’s abilities.
