Sarah Van Dam on her strong WorldTour debut at Tour Down Under

After a great ride at the Tour Down Under, Victoria’s Sarah Van Dam has been involved in a collision in Australia.

“Unfortunately, Sarah Van Dam was clipped by the wing mirror of a van during a training ride in Adelaide on Friday. She thankfully didn’t come down. But she did report pain in her shoulder as a result of the impact. After x-rays it was discovered that she has a broken collarbone. This sadly rules her out of the remaining races in Australia,” her team, Ceratizit–WNT Pro Cycling posted. “We’ll update further as soon as we have more details on the next steps, but in the meantime please join us in wishing Sarah a speedy recovery.”

Coming off a strong season debut

On Sunday, she finished the Santos Tour Down under, with some great results at the three-day stage race. Noemi Rüegg (EF Education-Oatly) took the overall win as well as points. Van Dam finished third in the points competition. This was thanks to a fourth on stage 1, and 11th on Stage 2. The second stage featured the notorious Willunga Hill. Van Dam finished fifth on the final stage.

“It was a great start for our team, especially considering it was our first race together. With five out of six riders being new to the team this year, there was a lot of excitement and energy going into the race. The two stages that involved sprints were quite different. And honestly, our original plan for Stage 1 was for me to be part of the lead-out. Not be the sprinter,” she said.

The staff at Canadian Cycling Magazine also hope that Van Dam can recover quickly!
