Tom Dumoulin relives memorable 2017 Giro moment at Umbrail Pass

Laurens ten Dam and the 2017 Giro winner shared a laugh as the Dutchman crouched in the grass recreating the moment that has defined his first Grand Tour victory

Perhaps one of the most memorable moments in Tom Dumoulin’s first Grand Tour victory at the 2017 Giro d’Italia wouldn’t be as funny today if the Dutchman hadn’t managed to defend the leader’s pink jersey on the Stage 16 finish in Bormio. Despite losing time, Dumoulin would go on to win the Giro in Milan with a strong final time trial.

On that fateful day into Bormio, the leaders had already crested the Stelvio and headed through Switzerland to the Umbrail Pass. On a flat section of road just before the climb started, TV cameras caught images of Dumoulin suddenly stopping then removing his helmet and crouching in the grass to take an urgent nature break.

On Wednesday, Laurens ten Dam and Dumoulin were out for a training ride and upon coming to stop where Dumoulin released his distressed bowls, took a moment to relive that moment from May 2017.

The two shared a laugh as Dumoulin reenacted the scenes from the now infamous moment. Like in 2017, Dumoulin stopped at the large road sign, dismounted, removed his helmet and crouched in the grass. The only difference was this time Dumoulin wasn’t wearing the pink jersey and didn’t have a frantic chase to limited his losses when they ascended Umbrail Pass.
