Trek-Segafredo reportedly to field women’s team in 2019

Lizzie Deignan and Ellen van Dijk to join

Cycling Weekly has reported that Trek-Segafredo will create a women’s team called Trek Factory Racing for next season, with Lizzie Deignan and Ellen van Dijk to join the new squad. This season Trek became a co-title sponsor of women’s squad Trek-Drops, right now racing the women’s Giro d’Italia.

Astana, FDJ, Lotto-Soudal, Mitchelton-Scott, Sunweb and Movistar are all WorldTour outfits with sister teams. Michelton-Scott is second in the Women’s WorldTour team competition.

Deignan, currently on leave from Boels-Dolmans to have a baby, would join van Dijk, now with Sunweb, and Italian duo Elisa Longo Borghini and Audrey Cordon-Ragot of Wiggle-High5. Longo Borghini is 12th in the Women’s WorldTour individual standings while van Dijk is 17th. Longo Borghini placed third in the first 2018 WorldTour race, Strade Bianche, and is 9th in the Giro after seven stages. Deignan was the 2016 Strade champion.

Trek-Segafredo is scheduled to have a press conference on Monday, July 16, the Tour de France’s first rest day, where it’s expected the new team will be announced. Trek’s Toms Skujiņš currently wears the polka dot King of the Mountains jersey at the Tour de France.
