Talk about a bonus for good attendance.

As reported by the CBC, children at Regina’s Albert Community School were rewarded for their faithful attendance and punctuality recently—with the gift of a brand new set of wheels for each of them.

On Thursday, Dec. 17, 26 kids were the proud—and no doubt, the gleeful—beneficiaries of an initiative called Bikes for Kids, the CBC reported. The idea behind the program is to encourage better attendance at the school, with kids given a ballot for each day they arrived on time and stayed in class for the full day’s teachings. Those ballots, reportedly, were then dropped into the proverbial hat, the kids’ names entered into a draw to receive a new bike. An additional five bikes will be given to a single teen mothers’ group in the city, helping their children have the gift of mobility.

According to a representative with Dominion Lending Centres, who, along with the United Way of Regina, donated the bikes to the cause, the response of the children to the event’s outcome was a prize in itself.

“We’re very lucky,” he said, “and fortunate to be able to do the things that we do and it’s a nci way to give back.” Next year, those same reports say, organizers hope to raise enough funds to boost the bar on the initiative, giving out 100 bikes to a handful of local schools.
