UCI Mountain Bike World Championships Day 5: Double bronze for downhill women

Junior Rosser and elite Buchar taste bronze

Lauren Rosser survived three crashes on a rain-slick course to take bronze in the junior women’s downhill race in Champéry, Switzerland, a feat repeated by Claire Buchar in the elite women’s event. Buchar’s race saw yet another gold for France as Emmeline Ragot completed the descent in 4:54 with Brit Rachel Atherton 15 seconds back. Rosser, the defending world champion, was nipped for silver by the third to last rider of the day, France’s Agnes Delest. It was Manon Carpenter of Great Britain who usurped Rosser’s title.

In the junior men’s gravity event, Aussie Troy Brosnan defended his rainbow bands. Top Canadian was Luke Stevens finishing 23.7 seconds in arrears.

The elite men’s cross-country race was won by the World Cup winner, Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic on a course more slippery than snot on a doorknob. Multi-time world champion Julien Absalon grabbed another medal for France with bronze, and silver went to “hometown” boy Nino Shurter. Top Canadian Geoff Kabush was tenth, 5:27 back.
