Viral video of bike thieves leads to arrests, bikes still at large

On Dec. 29, Sean Verret and his wife of Squamish, B.C., were victims of a break-in. Three bike thieves broke into the couple's vehicle and used the garage-door opener to get into the garage. There, they found a 2014 Norco Carbon Range LE, a 2013 Norco Range 1 and a Giant Rainier, which the couple used to tow their daughter's trailer.

On Dec. 29, Sean Verret of Squamish, B.C., and his wife were victims of a break-in. Three bike thieves broke into the couple’s vehicle and used the garage-door opener to get into the garage. There, they found a 2014 Norco Carbon Range LE, a 2013 Norco Range 1 and a Giant Rainier, which the couple used to tow their daughter’s trailer. The thieves took all three bikes as the family slept, between 5:47 a.m. and 6:12 a.m. The thieves didn’t seem to notice that their actions were being recorded by a video camera. Verret later put the video footage on YouTube in an effort to help police track down the crooks.

It seems Verret’s plan worked. Global News reports that two of the suspects have been arrested and charged by police.

Ninteen-year-old Nathan Marcus Rodney and a 17-year-old from Squamish who cannot be named were arrested on Jan. 8, a week after high-quality video…went viral.

While the video garnered more than 70,000 hits and helped the RCMP with the arrests, the bikes have not been recovered.

“There’s more than enough outlets online for you to go and get the bike sold. A lot of the bikes that are stolen are from professional thieves,” said David Assenhein of Norco/John Henry Bikes to Global News.

Before Rodney was arrested, he already had a record that included theft, possession of stolen property, identity theft, drug and stolen auto charges. He had been released on bail.
