A bystander was taken to hospital and the bike was totalled

A bike owner endangered others when he recklessly went in pursuit of a bike thief in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen district on Saturday. The bike owner chased down the thief in a van driving the wrong way on a one-way street and rammed into him.

In the process he struck a bystander sending him to hospital and destroyed the bike as reported by NY Daily News.

According to the police, Jame Mansfield, 47, was loading his high-end bike into a van when it was snatched. The thief pedalled away and Mansfield went into pursuit getting into the driver seat of the van.

Driving the wrong way on a one-way street, he caught up to the thief and drove the truck into him. Mansfield also hit a pedestrian sending him to hospital with cuts to the head.

After hitting the thief with the van, Mansfield exited the vehicle and can be seen on security footage punching the would-be-thief who was able to escape.

The New York Police Department arrested Mansfield and charged with reckless endangerment. The bike was reportedly totalled when Mansfield drove into the thief.
