Watch: Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig’s incredibly honest and insightful post-race Flanders interview

Third-place finisher is hilariously animated skipping out on the boring clichés we so often hear from athletes

Cyclists, and quite frankly most athletes, can sound quite robotic in their post-race analysis repeating the same clichés and jargon without any sort of insight. On Sunday, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig caught everyone’s attention not just with her amazing ride to third at the Tour of Flanders but with her emotionally animated post-race interview. The Bigla Pro Cycling’s rider was overjoyed at the outcome of the race and willing to share her feelings about how it unfolded.

The 23-year-old Dane had just stormed to third place in one of the most prestigious one-day races on the Women’s WorldTour calendar. It was her biggest career result. Explaining the final stages of the races, Uttrup Ludwig was enthusiastically honest about the race.

“It was going full gas into the Kwaremont and then BAM let’s put the hammer down. We tried and it was fun. You know people were screaming at the side and you just feel that energy,” Uttrup Ludwig explained with enthusiasm unheard of in a post-race interview before continuing to describe the amazing crowd atmosphere and frantic effort to stay away until the finish line.

At last year’s La Course by Le Tour de France, Uttrup Ludwig was similarly emotional breaking into tears as she expressed her joy from an amazing day on the bike in which she raced to fourth place. Uttrup Ludwig willingness to open up in front of the microphone and honestly convey her emotions is a real breath of fresh air. Athletes around the world should take notice.
