Mathieu van der Poel is one of the sports most exciting riders to watch. The 22-year-old is seeping talent which has resulted in an impressive string of results in his young career. While he surely has a lot of innate talent, it’s clear he’s sharpened his skills and he just keeps getting better.
If you ever wondered what van der Poel’s secret is, it might just be he’s having a whole lot of fun. “I think having fun is the most important thing. Especially in our profession as a sportsman, it’s very important to keep having fun.”
It’s rare to see van der Poel make a mistake but in training, he explains how he’s not afraid to make them.
“I do everything by intuition when I ride here,” he says. “Like on the beach when I turn, I think I can’t do any faster but in the next lap I try it nevertheless and then I just await the results.”
