World champion Ganna scores fourth 2022 time trial victory at Critérium du Dauphiné
Wout Van Aert bolsters GC lead with another second place
Photo by: SirottiIt was another chrono win for world time trial champion Filippo Ganna on Wednesday’s fourth stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné. Ganna is now four for five in 2022 time trials, only Stefan Bissinger getting the better of Ineos’s Italian in this season’s UAE Tour. Race leader Wout Van Aert was only two seconds slower than the Italian, and he padded his lead at the top of the table. Van Aert leads Matteo Cattaneo (Italy/Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl) by 53 seconds and teammate Primož Roglič by 56 seconds.

The Course
The chrono was a fairly flat, but long and taxing 31.9-km affair from Montbrison to La Bâtie d’Urfé. Two time checks sat at the 11.5 and 21 km marks.

One of the favourites, Brandon McNulty, suffered a mechanical and there was a slow bike exchange after some dithering about what to do.
The Top of the GC Table
Twenty-three riders were +0:12 of Van Aert at the beginning of the day. Jonas Vingegaard, runner-up in last year’s Tour de France, posted the fourth fastest provisional time, while the 2020 Giro d’Italia winner Tao Geoghegan Hart was the fifth fastest. Damiano Caruso, the runner-up of the 2021 Giro, nicked Geoghegan Hart’s place.
Soon after his teammate Primož Roglič went through the first time check only seven seconds slower than Ganna, race leader Wout Van Aert headed down the start ramp.
Van Aert was 11 seconds faster than Ganna at time check one. Ahead, teammate Roglič finished in fourth. Surprisingly, Van Aert was 11 seconds slower than Ganna at time check two, but pulled back nine seconds in the final section.
Roglič finished fifth, Vingegaard seventh, Caruso eight and Geoghegan Hart ninth.
Thursday is hilly but not exceptionally so.
